WAIHI.
[fbom a cokkespondbnt.] September £>th, 1881. Notwithstanding the want of machinery, there is a considerable amount of prospecting still going on, especially at the Martha end of the hill, where the gold appears to bs stronger than at any other portion of the spur. The new find iv the Young Colonial would seem to prove that the gold is making in that direction, but it is not certain whether the reef struck is the same as that in the Martha; its course is somewhat different, and the character of the quartz also varies. As, however, there are no doubt mauy parallel lodes in the hill it is thought by those able to form an opinion that the reef is a new discovery, and one which is likely to further prore the value of the district. In the adjoining claim, the Little Tommy, work is progressing satis(aotorily, and the country is becoming firmer as the reef is approached. In the Bright Smile .Licensed Holding (Creighton and party), works for a low level tunnel have been opened out to intersect the Martha reef. This claim takes iv a large portion of the flat spur beyond the Martha, and the general opinion of miners appears to i be that when the reef is opened out'at this point, owing to the firm character of the country, the rqn of gold will be likely to prove rich. Up to the present time none of the flat has been opened out, and the development of this claim will prove a great deal for the permanency of the district. Several extensive claims havo been taken up lately adjoining the Bright Smile and work will be begun in earnest as soon as the weather settles. In the Sunbeam, Morton and party are putting in a deep level to iutersect the
leader cut in the upper workings, and from which good prospects were obtained by hand crushing, the precious metal being of the saose rich quality as that in the Martha.' There is a desire on the part of claimholders to hold on their interest pending the exeetion of machinery. The weather continues very wet and there is abundance of water.
