received a despatch, enclosing a preliminary report from the Koyal Astronomical Society ;■■ relating to the transit of Venus in" 1882.'- ' The report contains suggestions as to the stations favorable to the observation of the different phrases The report also states that Australia and New Zealand should be the best statious for observing, the phase known as the Egress Retarded. The society suggest that Auckland would probably be the best site for the observation in^ !Sew Zealand, and further that the New Zealand party of three gentlemen should leave London about July Ist, arriving at Auckland in the first week of September, thus giving them time to consult with the local observers. At the Police Court to- day the proprietor of the Metropolitan hotel was fined 20s and costs for a breach of the licensing ordinance in refusing to supply a man with a cup of tea without sufficient reason. James Smith, a draper, was fined a similar amount for a breach of the Employment of Females Act by employing females after 2 o'clock on Saturday afternoon. The s.s. Wakatipu arrived from Sydney at one o'clock this morning, and proceeded to the Quarantine Station. Dr Johnson, Chief Medical Officer, proceeded on board this morning, and if satisfied as to passengers having been recently vaccinated the vessel will be admitted to pratique. The 1 launch h'S returned from the quarantine station, and as there is no sickness on board the Wakatipu, she will be admitted to pratique to>morrow.
