ALBURNIA.

The miue manager reports, under date the 2nd September, 1881. as follows :— •• Sons of Freedom Tunnel: Driving has still been continued through the Whau company's ground. By the last surrey. we hare now seven feet to drive to reach tbe boundary. As soon as our boundary is reached, I purpose cutting through the reef,'and continuing the drive on the hangingwall side, as tbe winze coming down from the 160 feet level is being sank on.that lide. We will have 15 feet to drive from the boundary to get under the winze, and when that is driven, I intend starting a rise to meet the winze, so as to secure good ventilation previous to extending the tunnel again in our own ground. This will also open up this lar«e block of ground, so that when tbe tunnel is extended stoping can be started at once should the reef prove payable. 160 feet level, winze: I mentioned in my last that we had cut a leader in the winze coming in from the hangingwall. This leader emitted so xnucbuas that we have been unable to do much as regards sinking since until yesterday, when we had comVleted the erection of doors and , air boxes tto convey air down the winze, which has completely cleared it now of gas and foul air, and will, I hope, give sufficient ventilation to carry down the winze its required depth. This winze at present is very difincnlt for sinking, being now nearlyone mass of quartz owing to the, near approach to the junction of the two reefs, which are now only separated 'by a small vein of mullock from eight to ten inches wide. The footwall portion, or Sons of Freedom reef, still maintains a "very good appearance, and lam in great hopes that when this block of ground is opened up, there will be some good results obtained. 70 feet level: This winze is now holed to the 160 feet level, after sinking a distance of 100 feet. .The..mm hitherto engaged here have started to open up a drive at the bottom* of this winze on the leader, and. as soon as the level is extended far, enough, stoping operations will at once be started. In sinking this winze, the leader shewed gold to & distance of within 20 feet of the 1 bottom, and ; I. ; have, every reason to believe, from previous operations on this! leader, that. this block will prove rexnunerative. Stoping has been carried on: over this level with a small staff of men. The leader here is s'malljand poor, the results "being"similar to those last reported. Wbau level, Success reef: I informed you some time since that I purposed opening up on this reef. This is now being done, •> drive having been extended 25 feet west: the reef averaged from 18 inches j to 2 feet wide. A trial crushing from this place has been forwarded to the battery, and although we saw but few colors while breaking out the stone, it averaged 12clwts to the load. This I consider sufficient encouragement to prospect the reef some distance further. Battery: During the month the battery has been constantly employed for two shifts by tributers and outsiders. The company have crushed 70 tracks of quartz for the return of slozs Sdwts melted gold.—Thos. Radfobd." ; aOLD KETUENB. JtlßUßNiA.—Christy and party have banked 34oza lldwts gold, the result of 16 loads at the Company's battery. KtJBANTTi Hill.—-Jones and party's crushing yielded 22ozs 13dwt3 gold.
