[Reutek's Special.] London, August 31. The steamship Protos arrived to-day from Melbourne. Her cargo of meat, consisting of 200 carcasses of beef and 4000 sheep, is, so far as can be ascertained, in excellent condition. Berlin, August 31. Diplomatic relations between Germany and the Vatican, which for some time past have been somewhat strained, have now assumed a more friendly .character. The credentials of the newly appointed Roman Catholic Bishop of Treves received official recognition to-day from the Imperial Government. Capetown, August 31. Telegrams are to hand from Port Elizabeth reporting that the steamer Teuton, 1088 tons, owned by|ihe-Union Steam Company, has been wrecked at Quoin Point, in the neighbourhood of Algoa Bay. The vessel is reported to have had fully 200 persons on board, and of these only 27 have been saved. The news of the disaster has caused great excitement throughout the colony. ■;'■ Calcutta, Sept. 1.
