Stonewalling is still the orderjof the day, the House, according to our latest telegrams, having sat without a break since 7.30 last evening. There appears little prospect of any adjournment. It may be that both sides feel as if victory depended upon the result of the present debate, and are therefore determined to continue the struggle.

The Fire Brigades may expect in a few days the amount of their annual contribution from the Insurance Companies. A letter this morning says that, owing to representations made, steps have been taken to collect the amount from the several offices doing business on the Thames. We are desired to acknowledge receipt of the following furthpr subscriptions towards the funds of the Sbortlatid Volunteer Fire Brigade:—Ehrenfried Bros., £6 j Imperial Insurance Co. (per Win, McCullough), iSI Is ; North 'British and Mercantile Insurance Company (per Thomas Veale), £1 Is; D. Cloonan, 10s 6d, and W. Baker, £1. Tayior Bbos., of Tapu ttoad, notify through our columns that the milk supplied by them is of the purest quality, and free from injurious substances. The statements made respecting the milk supplied by this firm are without any foundation, and it is said the proprietors contemplate proceeding in a Court of Law againat un officer of the Borough Council for statements he has made respecting the milk supplied. Mb MULLIGAN, proprietor of the Cornwall Arms hotel at the corner of Cochrane and Pollen streets, is a public benefactor, in that he keeps a brilliant-light in the lamp over his door, to the great convenience of pedestrians. The Foreman of Works, with his usual want of consideration for the comfort: of the ratepayers, appears to have an intense delight in mending with soft mullook that part of Pollen street immediately in front of Mr Mulligan's door, and owing to the cart traffic carrying the soft mud on to the crossing used by pedestrians, the latter is always in a disgraceful state. At night time. ir. is almost impossible to pick a clean path from Cochrane street to the asphalt in Poilen street, and but for the light thrown by Mr Mulligan's lamp the difficulty would be greatly increased. Since Mr Mulligan not only keeps a light, but a brilliant one, burning, many are the expressions of gratitude to that gontlemau which have been uttered by those compelled to travel our streets by night time, ■ .
