OUR MINES.
MOANATAIARI
The directors have determined to keep the battery partly going, and a start will probably be made on company and tributes' stuff on Thursday morning next. The manager reports for last week as follows :—" 80 feet level, north-east of cross-cut, and east of shaft. The leader at this point is from two to three inches thick and of a promising character, though somewhat disordered at present. It has yielded some nice gold-bearing stones this week. The leader on opposite side of cross-cat has been cut off by means of a cross-course, and we are now trying to find it on the other side of this. All Nations leader, 80 feet level, west of shaft: We are cleaning up <?nd repairing the old drive with a view of proving the leader in tbe vicinity of main slide. A large block of ground is standing in this quarter, from 80 feet to tunnel level, which should be worked. No. 3 footwall leader : In driving west at tunnel level no material chaDge has taken place, and the same remark will apply to the rise at this level. .Operations here will be suspended after today, until the parcel of quartz now on hand is tested. Tunnel level, No. 3 stopes : There are two leaders here, besides some small stringers. These together will average 4 inches in thickness. The hanging-wall leader prodflte»d some good picked stone yesterday, and the country at present is all we could desire for gold. 132 feet level, No. 3 stopes: There are four branch leaders here, varying in width from 2 to 6 inches. They are also of different quality. Two have, however, shown good strong colors of gold when broken. Morning Star section. 50 feet level: The crosscut has been driven 20 feet this week, through a tight class of country. Very little could be done without powder for some shifts, but the ground has become much easier again. .1 think we are now very near the main slide, and next week we shall open out on one or two of the leaders intersected.—J. G. Vivian." ALBURNIA. Tbe mnnager's report is as follows :■— "I have the honor to inform yon that the ground in the new low level still continues very hard, so much so, that the contractors have thrown up their contract. I purpose now letting the" drive stand until I can have a survey made by Mr Bayldon in order to ascertain whether I cannot avoid driving through this hard belt of country at so great an expense. The Sons of Freedom tunnel has been extended 28 feet during *he past fortnight, having only 17 feet now to reach the bounday. The winze from 160 feet level is down 45 feet ; at this point a leader has come into the winze from the hanging-wall side, which I believe will prove to be the " specimen" leader—a few colours of gold were seen in it yesterday. It has not as yet functioned with the main reef, and when it does I am in hopes it will be better than at present. The winze on the hangingwall leader is now down 95 feet, : but we have not holed through as yet; this is owiDg to the great underlie the reef has taken so that when we reach the 160 feet level we will not be more than 10 or 12 feet from the Sons _of Freedom reef, which leads me to the opinion that it is the same leader we have cut in the winze below 150 feet level. We are still taking out a trial crushing from the " Success " leader, but although we see colours of gold we have not met with anything very rich yet. —Thos. Radfobd." NEW GOLDEN CROWN. The manager reports :— During the past week the battery has been running full time; ten head of stampers has been employed on quartz from the No. 1 and 2 leaders at the 100-feet level, where those stopes are turning out a good supply of payable quartz. The remaining ten head of stamps are kept going on quartz from the footwall leader, from the Battery level and the Surface level. The general stuff is shaping up for a payable yield. About 151bs of picked stone has been saved during the past week.—T. A. Dunlop. OWHAROA. A parcel of gold from the Smile of Fortune claim weighing 3430zs 15dwts when melted was banked here on Saturday. 2ozs odwts gold from the Radical have also been banked. GOLD RETURNS. Jokee. —Artha and party have banked 2ozs lOdwts gold. Robinson and party, tributers, have banked oozs 7dwts gold.
