The Evening Star. PUBLISHED DAILY AT FOUR P.M. Resurrexi. SATURDAY, AUGUST 20, 1881.

Feom the Argus we learn that one of the Victorian mines has increased in value over one hundred thousand pounds owing to lodes having been discovered by using the diamond rock drill, which were not known to exist previously. This result should encourage mine owners to procure and work these drills, and the Government to secure for use on the goldfields a number of these useful appliances. Mr Beeves in the House asked if the Government intended purchasing drills, and we believe owing to his enquiries the Government have been induced to promise to place a sum of money on the Estimates for such a purpose. It might pay a few enterprising men even on the Thames to form a small company and subscribe funds sufficient to purchase a complete set of drills and appliancesand undertake the work ot prospecting for lodes and testing others in the several mining claims at (present carrying on operations. It will be a considerable time, even under the most favourable circumstances, before the Government could supply to the field a drill complete, ready to proceed to work, so that a private company would fear littb interference in the matter of competition. Such acompany would confer a favor on the field of incalculable value, and might fairly ask assistance from the public at large, should any difficulty be found in getting the funds necessary. There are numbers of gentlemen on this field at all times willing to put their hands in their pockets, and contribute money to further projects that have for their object advantage to the public at large, and we believe assistance in the matter we are referring to would not be refused. We commend Hie suggestion to mine managers and speculators.
