The victory gained by Ayoub Khatf^gaH it is believed, lead to a grave rupture in the relations between Great Britain and Afghanistan. In the House of' Commons on July 29, Mr Gladstone admitted the importance of the engagement as affecting Kandahar, but stated that there was a stroug Anglo-Indian army in the proximity of that city. Ayonb Khan's proposal of peace, based on the redistribution *of territory was a feint.
The heaviest telegram ever transmitted to a single paper was sent recently to the Chicago Times. It consisted of the entire New Testament (the revised version of course) word for word, from the beginning of Matthew to. the end of the Revelations. This immense telegram occupied nearly eighty nine columns, and is a feat in" the art of telegraph that has never been equalled. The time occupied in its transmission from .New York to Chicago was from 6. to 11.30 o'clock p.m., nineteen wires being used up to nine o'clock, and twentyone after that hour. The number of words was 83.715 ; nearly 84,000.
