London, August 16. The homeward Australian mails which left Melbourne on sth July, were delivered via Brindisi to-day. Washington, August 17. This morning's bulletin reports that President Garfield is still in n very critical state, but his case is not considered hopeless. Calcutta, August 17. Telegrams are to haud. today from Afghanistan, reporting that the troops recently despatched by the Ameer to Khelati Grhilzai, on road between Cabul and Candahar, have now evacuated that place. The object of the movement has not transpired. The Irish Land Bill Passed. In the House of Lords to-day, the Irish Land Bill was again brought up for further consideration of amendments made by the House of Commons at the last sittingVarious modifications were discussed at some length, but the bill was finally agreed to without further alteration, and duly passed through committee. In the course of the debate the Marquis of Salisbury expressed himself satisfied with the final change made in the measure by the House of Commons, but he added that he held that the House was answerable for results which might rise from carrying out the provisions of the bill.
