The latest cablegram from America conveys very alarming intelligence in reference to the state of President Garfield's health. The wording of the message is calculated to lead to the impression that scatters are even worse than stated, and it would not surprise us to learn by the next cable that the good and popular President of tbe United States has passed away—killed by the aat of a cowardly assassin. A late item of American news stated that the people of tbe States had subscribed £25,000 as a present to Mrs Garfield, and as an expression of sympathy with her under her great affliction, and we are sure should her husband die from the effects of the pistol shot of Gintean, the feeling will be moat intense, and the regret for the loss of the : new President universal.
