(To tho Editor of the Evening Star.) Siß.—My motto is, •• Honor to whom honor is due." Mr Speight is receiving from several quarters special, honors for his endeavors to procure the freehold of the Thames Goldfield, but others who have labored for years in the same direction are absolutely ignored, and their endeavors forgotten. For several years the most persistent efforts have been made by many in this matter of vital interest to us, and if ever we are to be on an equality with other parts of the colony, the Government must acquire for the benefit of the community the freehold of the whole district. Yourself, Sir, the Mayor (who is at present in Wellington), the County Chairman, the presinfc JudgeVj;, Macdonald, and the writer of this, have for years urged this matter on the attention of all Governments that | have been in power. J. Shdehan, \ -Ksq, was always a ready helper \ in this direction. I cannot say so much 1 for your senior member; he has until * lately abstained from seeing or waiting on Ministers, alleging as his reason that it was impossible that he could wait upon such men as they were—but, thanks to the Triennial Parliaments Bill, elections come more frequently, and new life and zeal have been infused, into some minds heretofore very apathetic in connection-with the direct and practical interests of the Thames district. Mr Speight deserves all praise for his efforts, but he only pursues the course that others have done for years back. I hope if this is to be , made a single electorate that some local man will be the successful candidate. ; We want a practical man, one who thoroughly understands the requirements of the district which he represents. —1 am, &c, One who knows. Thames, August, 1881.
