The following is a summary of the Public Works Estimates : —Immigration, £24,588; public works departmental, £12,772 ; railways, £1,017,636 ; surveys of new lines of railways, £4,000; roads, £262,763 19s sd; land purchase, £87,623, 17s 4d ; waterworks on goldfields, £22,000; telegraph extension, £11,054 11s 2d ; public buildings, £190,906 ; lighthouses, £34,545 lls Id ; contingent defence, £84,000; charges and expenses of raising loans, £14,000: total £1,765,989 19s.
Railways:—Kawakawa: Eesident engineer, . £400; construction and land, £42,060. Expenditure between Ist April, 30th June, 1881, and liabilities on latter date, £25,226 2s sd: total, £42,060----£2526 2s sd. Whangarei to J£amo: Assistant engineer, £300; construction and land, £14,850—£16,154 5s Id: total, £24,850—£16,154 5s Id. Kaipara to YVaikato :—Auckland Office : District .Engineer, £600; office engineer, £350; cadet (four mouths at £120 and eight at £150), £50 allowance, £173; clerk, £175 -, messenger, £95—£1393 ; construction and land, £56,216 12s.
