NEW PLYMOUTH.

Destructive Fire.

This day,

A fire broke out at 3 o'clock this morning at Murphy's boarding house, alongside the Oddfellows' hall. It was first discovered by Mr May, of the sightascope, who was awoke by a smell of smoke in his bedroom. He got up and went down stairs, when he found the dining rooms was on fire. He at once gave the alarm, and aroused all in the house, but before water or much aid could be obtained the fire had a good hold on the building, and then there was -no hope for the Oddfellows' Hall, which was only separated from the house by a 12ft passage. There was time however, to got the piano and musical iustruments belonging to the Philarmonic Society from the hall before they caught fire, but nothing could save the building, which soon was in flames, a crockery shop adjoining was also burnt, and a shed at the back were the fire was stopped. It was a beautiful night with scarcely any wiad, or the destruction would have been heavier. Insurances as far as can be gathered are :—Murphy's on building, £400 in Union ; Oddfellows' Hall, on building, £500 in South British ; £550 in Northern; Turner, on building, £100 in New Zealand, £100 in National. Water was very scarce.
