COUNTY COUNCIL.

After our going to press last evening, the following business was transacted at the meeting of the above Council:—

LETTERS

In reply te a letter from Mr Perry, referring to the injury done by the flood to the connection between his tailings plant and the big race, and asking the Council to lay on the water to his new premises, the following resolution, proposed by Cr Baguall, and seconded bj Cr Carpenter, was carried : —" That water be supplied Mr Perry conditionally that the price realised ihe same as heretofore, under the original agreement made with Me.-srs Perry, Fisher, and Bull.

After discussing at considerable length communications from Mr Greenville relative to his late ouster ol office, it was resolved, on the motion of Cr Brown, seconded by Cr Coutts, " That the sum of £1 9s be paid to Mr Greenville, the costs imposed upon him in the action to oust him out of office as a Councillor.

It was decided to give a share of County advertisements, &c, to the Hauraki Tribune, published in Paeroa.

The surveyor was authorised to grant an extension of time to Bennett, contractor at Puriri.

An application was ordered to be made to the Warden for permission to place mullock in crack beds,

The matter of the new offices came up, and a resolution was passed thanking the Chairman for his exertions in securing the buildings from the Government and endorsing his action in having alterations, &c, made.

The following were appointed a committee to deal with a number of letters received by tho Council, with power to act in cases requiring immediate attention: —The Chairman, Crs Carpenter, Deeble, and Thorburn. Letters were received from K. McCormick, asking that the cost of repairing the Te Papa road be refunded; from Owen Griffiths re the difficulty of carrying out his carting contract; from Mr Douglas on behalf of the owners of the Young William claim, asking that the Hape road be made passable; from Mr Hudson respecting landslips near his residence; and from Messrs Small and Gordon enclosing an account for £110, estimated cost of repairing damage to the Moanatairi Tramway.

The case of W. Donnelly was referred to the Charitable Aid Committee.

THE ENGINEER'S SALARY,

The Chairman caoved that the portion of a former resolution as affecting the reduction of the Engineer's salary be rescinded, and he be paid in future £400 per annum.—This was agreed to. A vote of thanks was also tendered the Engineer and other officers for the indefatigable manner in which they exerted themselves to remedy the breaches caused by the late flood. PAEROA JUNCTION EOAD. Report of the Committee appointed to inquire into the merits of a petition by certain residents at Paeroa, having reference to a proposed line of road from Paeroa to the Junction of the Waihou and Ohinemuri rivers : —" The Committee have the honor to report that they proceeded to Paeroa, and took evidence upon the matters referred to them. The witnesses examined were owners of the land through which the road asked for must necessarily pass, the majority of whom had not signed the petition. They were not unanimous as to the necessity for a road being made, or which would be the most suitable line. The weight of evidence, however, was in favor of a road, and four lines were submitted as suitable, viz: i. That at present in use, commencing at Puke - Pderoa road passing through a small portion of Mr Fraser's race course property, thence through a small portion of Mr Phillips' leasehold, thence through the freehold of Messrs Thorpe aud liobson to a point above the Junction. Total length, about 48 chains. 2. A line from PukePaeroa road, passing in a direct line to the Junction, through Mr Phillips' leasehold, a small portion of a section of land owned by Mr Beunett, and land belonging to Messrs Hogg and Coutes; about 38 chains. 3. From PukePaeroa road along boundary of Mr Wick's land, through Mr Beunet's seotion, and land belonging to Messrs Hogg and Coates—about 35 chains. 4. From PukePaeroa road running through Mr Wick's land and that belonging to Mr Lavery— 26 chains. In view of the difference of opinion existing and the expressed intention of certain holders of property not to give land required for the road, the committee are unable to make a positive recommeudation in favor of a particular line, but inasmuch as a majority of those interested indicated that ihey would be satisfied with either of the above lines, the Committee recommend the Council to lay off such one of them as the Engineer may approve in the. event of the owners of the lands giving a road not less than 40 feet wide, and fencing it, and that the County, after dedication, take it over and maintain it as a County road. —Win. Carpenteb, Chairman."

survsyok's eepoet;. The report of the Surveyor to the Water Eaee Committee waa read as fol-

lows :—'• Gentlemen —I have the honor to report (is folio* s on the damage done on tlie Thames Water Race by fhe recent flood, ami beg to attach the interim report ot the 18th July. The damage done to the .Race was greater than I at first anticipated, and a considerable expenditure will be necessary to put the Race again in good working order. The break in the Race occurred on the evening of the 16th July, and repairs were executed sufficient to allow of bringing in water on the 30th July— something less than fourteeu days after the flood. Attached is a list of the principal damages done to the Race. I beg leave to bring under the notice of the Council the exertions used by the men on the Race to prevent damage on the night of the flood, and to repair the damage done. The Foreman was especially zealous, and he and the other men not only did their work well but ran considerable risks in the execution of their duty during the stormy nights of the 16th and 17th July.—Alex. Aitken, County Engineer."

[We have been unable to get the Engineer's report for publication, our friend across the way having got possession of it.]
