AUCKLAND.
This day, Wickham and Hurst.
The criminal prosecution for libel 'nstituted by Mr W. J. Hurst against J. D. Wickham has ended by the latter pleading guilty and tendering an abject written apology, in which he acknowledges the defamatory statements made by him against Mr Hurst to be false and without the slightest foundation, and binds himself to pay £20 towards the prosecutor's expenses, while regretting that he is not in a position to pay more, and he undertakes to refrain from publising criticisms on Mr Hurst for the future. The apology was accepted. The Judge, in passing sentence, told the defendant that had tlie case gone to the jury, the consequences would have been serious for him, as his conduct in publishing the libels upon Mr Hurst was utterly indefensible. Fined Is, and the costs imposed.
