In reply to a deputation which waited upon him yesterday, Mr Graves, the new Minister of Trade and Customs, promised to consult the Cabinet with a view to the recession of the regulation whereby .New Zealand barley re-imported into Victoria free when it was intended for maltiDg purposes previous to re-exportation. In the Legislative Assembly last night, a debate took place on the subject of the report of the Commission whioh met in London t.Q report on charges in reference to the contract for the carriage of the Steel rails. In course of the dispussiop Mr Griffiths, the leader of the Opposition, jnade a speech, in which he acknowledged he had been mistaken in accusing the Premier (Mr Mcllwraith) of complicity in connection with the contract, but he renewed the charges previously made against Mr Ashwell, the engineer representing Government in London, of
collusion with the firm of which the Premier's brother was a member. Mr Griffiths concluded by moving a motion setting forth that the contract for the carriage of the rails had been made subordinate to the interests of private persons. The debate continued for some time, but was at length adjourned to next
