The Evening Star. PUBLISHED DAILY AT FOUR P.M. Resurrexi. MONDAY, JULY 11, 1881.

The excellent yield from the Martha Claim lodged at the Bank of New Zealand this morning has again directed attention to the "Waihi district. The anticipations of the prospectors have been more than realised, for the stone has •yielded nearly four and a-half ounces per ton, and the value of the metal is almost one pound per ounce more than the average value of the gold obtained on the Thames. This result should set at rest the carpings of some persons who have consistently run down the new field, and in many other ways discredited the statements made by the prospectors and others interested in the district. The Martha shareholders have succeeded in completing arrangements for their battery, of sixteen head> and already.steps have been taken to start work upon it. But 16 head of stampers is of little use where such large bodies of stone exist as at Waihe, and very wisely the proprietors of the adjoining mines to the Prospectors are speaking of amalgamating and forming a large company. It is part of the proposal to erect a battery of 40 head of stampers, and instead of working the several claims independently, to put in one low level and to take the reef out in a systematic manner, and at a comparatively small expense. We trust that such a course will be taken, and that before many months are past the Waihe district will prove itself to be one of the richest of our out-lying goldfields.
