. 'li-UjJincfiijj* the more remarkable wreaths laid apon the coffin ol the late Czar was one of great beauty, inscribed "To the Czar. Civilizer," from the lady doctors of Russia. Thirty ladies, belonging to the medical profession in St. Petersburg and elsewhere, had united in this tribute to their sovereign, under whom their sex was first permitted to practice the healing art in Europe. In the United States, ladydoctors are more numerous even tban in Russia. There are at present 244 ladies in America who graduated at the Woman's Medical College of Philadelphia. Dr Rachel Bodley, the Dean of that College recently instituted an inquiry into the success of its graduates in tht-ir profession. One hundred and eighty-one of the 244 answered her inquiries; of these, thirty had abandoned the profession, ninety-eight or more than oue half the remainder, had devoted themselves to the treatment of peculiar to their sex; while 59 -were employed as visiting physicians in some asylum, hospital, or school for girls. Springfield, in Massachusets, and a town in Michigan, having women as "city physicians," and seventy-three medical societies in the Union have admitted women to,full membership. Of fifty who were married, forty-three report that the study and practice of medicine had been favourable to the discharge of their domestic duties as wives and mothers. The average income of seventy-six who fnrnifshed particulars was nearly £600 per annum. Four lady doctors are earning from £3000 to £4000 per annum. :' A Leipsic journal gives a method which it asserts will prevent lamp chimneys from * crocking. The treatment will not only render lamp chimneys, tumblers, and. like articles more durable, but may be applied with advantage to crockery, stoneware, porcelain, &c. The chimneys, tumblers, &c, are put into a pot filled with cold water, to which some common table salt lv ? been added. The water is well boiled over a fire, and then allowed to cool slowly. "When the articles are taken out and washed, 'Ihey will be found to resist afterwards any sudden changes of temperature.
