Judge Gillies in this charge said the cases were the average number, and of the usual character, eighteen prisoners charged with twenty offenceß, four of the prisoners being natives, and six offences against tbe person, nine against property, and three mixed cases of libel and perjury. None of the cases were of an aggravated character, still some were of a grave nature. He deprecated the action of Magistrates in sending cases which they might have dealt with themselves. He referred to the difficulty of proving arson, but it a reasonable supposition were shown the Grand Jury were bound to send it for trial. He explained the law of libel in its bearing on cases against Wickham, of the Free Lance and said that while the public acts of public men were open to fair comment, the private character of a man waa not to be so commented on unless the publisher of the disparaging statements was prepared to show that they were true. One of the cases on the Calendar appeared to come under the latter category. He referred in complimentary terms to the new Registrar and the new Crown Prosecutor.

The Home Rule claim at the Tiki (better known as Sheehan's) has been formed into a Company with a capital of £16,200 in £1 shares, nil paid up, and the following gentlemen were elected directors : Messrs K. The railway expenditure in the Auckland Provincial District was £98,317 on the HelensvilleBiverhead railway, and £820,243 on the WaikomitiOhaupo line, making £915,560 for the Provincial District. The expenditure in Wellington aggregated £1,105,332,
