The Evening Star. PUBLISHED DAILY AT FOUR P.M. Resurrexi. MONDAY, JULY 4, 1881.

A cablegeam conveys the startling intelligence than an attempt has been made upon the life of General Garfield. the new President of the .United States" The person making the murderous attack, is described as a solicitor, of Chicago, a disappointed office seeker. We are not surprised that tbe intelligence should cause great excitement throughout the States, for the new President is a good man, highly esteemed)by all sections of the community, and one that has, by his own exertions, risen to the high station he now occupies. Since the days of Abraham Lincoln no attempt has been made upon the life of the " first citizen of the States,'' and the present act can only be accounted for as that of a lunatic. It seems but a very short time since the new President deliverfd his inaugural speech and entered upon his duties, and yet on this day, the fourth of July, a day usually of rejoicing throughout the country, to be laid upon perhaps his dying bed, is a hard fate. By our latest cables we are rejoiced to learn, however, that favorable symptoms have set in, and'that it is possible the skill of his medical advisers may succeed in saving a valuable life to his country.
