OUR MINES.
OLD CALEDONIAN.
The manager reports for the week as follows:—"Crosscut at No. 3 lerel is now cleaned out. It is connected with .No. 4 winze, and driven 30 feet S.W. from wiuze. on the junction of Noa. 1 and reefs, which is fully 10 feet in thickness. I have not broken any of the quartz yet; shall start doing so this week, when I shall be able to judge of its quality. No. 1 level: Crosscut and drive are not yet secured. I expect to have them cleaned out and timbered by the middle of the week. Driving on Nos. 1 and 2 reefs from new cross-cut has been continued on till to-day. I hare started the men to break out a portion of No. 2 reef. It is scarcely anything but one miss of mineral, most of which is dark, heary muudic. No gold has been seen yet, but there is a little antimony aud copper. O'fiuglien crushed lOlbs of stone, from which they got 3>zs 16dwts.—T. B. Hicks." NEW WHAU. The orossont on the lfiO feet level is in 60 feet, and is now np to the Whan boundary. The manager expeota to cut. Christie's leader at; this level in another 20 feet, and the hanging-wall leader in another 20 feet. On the intermediate level he is sinking a winze, which is down 40 feet. This will meet the crosscut coming in from the 160 feet level. The lode is from 12 to lf> inches thick, and shows good mineral indications. On the intermediate level, near main winze, he is taking out a small block of the main reef, and thinks it will go about 2ozs to the ton. ALBUBNIA. The contractors for the Sons of Freedom tunnel through the Whau ground are making good progress, and are now in about 70 feet. The manager is holing out a chamber on the opposite Whau boundary, preparatory to sinking a winze to meet this drive, which will give good ventilation, and will also prove the ground, which he thinks should prove payable. Good headway id also btiug
made at driving on the hanging-wall leader, and orei 60 feet has been driren but the leader is very small, and no gold has yet been seen in it. Working has been suspended for the last two or three days on the winze from 70ft level on the hanging-wall leader, as the air was too foul, but the manager has now erected a fan, which should supply sufficient air. There is no change to report in the other workings. NEW GOLDEN CROWN. In opening up the No. 1 battery Jevel leader at 100 feet level yesterilay" tfie manager unearthed from 15 to 20 pounds of specimens, and two or thrle pounds more were obtained to day from the tame leader. The manager reports for last week as follows:—Battery level: Stoping on the foot wall leader is again progressing above this level, and the general stuff from here is showing up well at the battery. During the week, a few pounds of picked stone has been saved from the leader. 100 feet level: Stopirig on the No. 1 battery level reef has been commenced. The reef averages about eighteen inches in thickness, carrying good minerals and other indications, with a little gold showing occasionally. lam also driving along the course of this leader, at this level, Ho the north-east of the cross-cut where the reef is very much smaller. Stoping is also being carried on at (his level ou the No. 2reef, butj the'^a^rtz from here is of very low grade. There is no change to report in the 40/eet lef#l workings. 170 feet level: Tlw contract on the No. 1 main reef at this level has been suspended for the present. The battery has been working full time during the week, and the general crashing is again showing up for a. payable return.— T. A. Dtxnlop. ■ SOUTHERN CROSS. . The manager reports for the fortnight as follows :—•• I have the honor to report that during last fortnight 10 load* of quartz bare been broken out of cross leader near shaft, and crushed for about lldwts to the load. It is rather poor, but still I think there is a chance of it improving, as it is a strong body of stone, and carrying more mineral than is generally seen in surface leaders, and we can see colors of gold occasionally in the stone. I h»ve a few men stoping on Hamilton's leader, and have been getting a specimen now and again from there. The leader looks well, but is small. Crashing: 24 loads of quartz and lOlbVof picked stone have been crashed at the Alburnia, and produced 67ozt amalgam, which was retorted for the yield of 24ozs ldwt gold. Also 100 loads have been put through from the slip on the Alburma tramway, for the return of, 19ozs amalgam. This looks very small,'bat 1 it will leave a small margin of profit, as we have little more to do than fill it into the trucks. There are 58 loads more in the battery, and there is a great deal more loose stuff to be put in. When this is crushed, we will be able to form an opinion whether this portion of the'hill will pay to take it in a face and crash it or not."—James Coxjtts. GOLD RETURNS. KxxßANur Hill.—Gordon and party's crushing yielded 7ozs 15dwts gold. Moanataiabi.—Robertson and party have finished crushing at the above batteryfor 6ozs 15dwts gold.
New Golden Abboto^ (Tairaa).-—Mr Cornec, to day banked 29ozrl9dirt9 from this claim. ' '' '
