In the House of Commons to-day, a question was put to the Premier with regard to the position of affairs in Eastern Europe, and a long and animated debate ensued with regard to the Anglo-Turkish Contention entered into during the last; administration, in terms of which the Island of Cyprus was placed under British rule as a guarantee for certain reforms to be carried out by the Porte in Asiatic Turkey. In the course of the debate the Radical 'members strongly urged that the Convention should be cancelled. The Eight Hon. W. E. Gladstone, in reply, renewed and justified the attacks he had formerly made upon the Conservative policy, but he stated that it was quite impossible for the British Government to restore Cjprus to Turkish misrule. He added, however, that Lord Duffer in, the present British Ambassador to the Porte, has been instructed to endeavour as far as possible to expedite

reforms in Armenia

In consequence of the slow progress which has hitherto been made in the negotiations for renewal of the commercial treaties of 1860 and 1873 between France and England, the French Government has agreed to prolong existing treaties, which would otherwise terminate ia October next, for a further period of three months.
