Would it not be well if the committee of the Thames Public Library were to copy the example of the School of Mines of Ballarat, and invite the co-operation of directors and managers of mining compa. nies in an endeavour to obtain the fullest Information concerning, and specimens illustrating, the occurrence of quartz, whether as lodes or leaders, in this neighbourhood ; and, with a view of facilitating the collating of such information and specimens, beg the attention of those gentlemen to the following papers showing what is required to render their cooperation moat valuable:. —A. Ground plan of mine, showing* tlie position of mine, shafts, drives, lodes; vertical sections of shafts, showing deposits and rocks from surface, referred lo the sea level; Longitudinal section, showing levels cross-cuts, faults and geological formation; Transverse section, showing crosscuts, levels, faults, and geological formation. [Note.—The sectioDS to be accompanied by full particulars of ' lodes and leaders, their nature, quality, association with other minerals and metals besides gold, the length and width of " makes of stone" and " shoot of gold," the bounding rocks of auriferous quartz, the " strike " (course*, the " dip " (angle of inclination from horison on line of " strike "), the " underlie " (angle of inclination from horizon at right angle to line of "strike"), with specimens (numbered and catalogued) of all kinds of deposits and rocks met with in sinking or driving.
