Race between Atlanta and Misfortune.

The long-looked-for event between the horses Atlanta and Misfortune came off at the Parawai racecourse this afternoon. The weather being very fine, a large number of persons were present and considerable interest was taken in the race. The course was not by any means, a light one although not cut up, and the jumps were the usual height and placed for the steeplechase. It was three o'clock before both horses came to the post, both in the pink of condition. &. Wight rode Misfortune, and a Coromandel man, whose name we did not ascertain, Atlanta. Betting was about even, though Misfortune was slightly, the favorite, his supporters offering £5, £10, and £20 on him just before the start. Mr Neat started. Misfortune baulked at the first timber, Casey's horse clearing it like a bird. Wight got his horse about, and before Atlanta was at the next jump, was again in full swing. Clearing jump No. 2 Atlanta's jockey came to grief, and before the runaway horse could be captured, Misfortune had completed the first round. Mr Casey mounted his beast and followed gamely, though he had another spill opposite the Bridge Inn. Eventually Misfortune came in a winner hands down.
