THE WAIHI VERSUS "ARGUS."
(To the Editor of the Evening Star.) Sib, —" Argus" must have some hidden motive for- so persistently charging every one connected with the Prospectors' claim with wilful misrepresentation and false* hood. He does not confine himself to the prospectors, bat pitches into those gentlemen who have confirmed the truth of your correspondent's report, and, to show their bona fides, published their names. " Argus" would have thepublic to believe that he is moved simply by a desire to guard against owners of claims at Waihi swindling the community. As far as I can learn, the prospectors and other claim holders are so well satisfied with their chances that they are not desirous of parting with interests "unlessit be so far as may be necessary to provide funds for the proper working of the ground." -A gentleman, I am informed, is making arrangements to erect a battery for the Martha claim holders,; and ig prepared to expend a larg6 sum of money for that purpose. If this be the case, and I believe it to be so, it is a guarantee that he saw enough to satisfy himself that the pros* pecta warranted the expenditure of his capital. What, then, can be "Argus'" motive? Were be to publish his name we might be able to unravel the mystery. I quite admit that it would be very wrong should the papers publish unreliable and exaggerated reports of Waihi or any other matter. Being personally interested in two of the claims, I am naturally anxious to see the new field fairly tested. I believe its own merits will shortly prove that " Argus" had no just grounds for making such sweeping assertions.—Yours, Ac, J. Qxfiht.Mi
