CALEDONIAN.

; At the No. 1 leyel the No. 2 reef is composed of hard quartz. The quartz in the hanging wall is well mineralised, and looks promising. The manager intends shortly to subject this lode to a battery test. The manager has been unable to find any traces of gold in the workings from the winze, and operations have consequently been suspended. The manager's report for the past week is as follows :-— "No. 1 level: Driving on the reef on both sides of the crosscut has been carried on for the past week with very little change. JSo. 1 reef is still composed of black clay and rubbly quartz; no gold has been seen, and the quartz is too white and very little mineral showing. No. 2 reef is very hard. The quartz in the hanging wall is well mineralised and looks promising for gold, especially towards the old workings on the south-west side of crosscut, and after driving 20 feet or so I will take out a trial crushing. I have this day let a contract to drive 50 feet in this direction at 16s per foot, leaving the Otago side of the crosscut stand until this is completed. No. 3 level: Having prospected both ends of the winze below this level without any trace of payable gold going either way, I have abandoned it for the present, and put the same men to rise on the same leader, to see if the gjld continues above the roof of this level. There is a large block of ground here which has not been prospected, and there was good gold got overhead in the level above. —I am, &c, —T. B. Hicks."

NEW WHAU.

The manager has two drives in progress —one from the intermediate and the other from the 160 feet level—to' cut Christie's leader. 11 should be to hand in one of them shortly. If the lode proves payable it will be a source of great prosperity to the Whau, 360 feet of the leader traversing the ground.
