Thames Goldfield Hospital.
Tbe monthly meeting of the Committee was held yesterday afternoon at the Salutation Hotel. Present—The President (Mr Comer); Treasurer (Mr Hume), and Messrs Frater, Marshall, MoGowan, Ehrenfried, Mennie, Wilson, Comes, Mcllhone, Abier, Mulligan, Radford, McCul lough, Hudson, Murray, Eenshaw. Veale, and the lievs Lush, Laishley, Neill, and O'Reilly. Tbe House Committee's report spoke of the satisfactory manner in which the work of the Hospital had been carried out during the past month. It also referred to the fact that a convalescent patient of the Hospital had been sent at his own desire to friends at Coromandel. The report was received and adopted. The Treasurer read the following statement: —Receipts: To cash balance forward, 12s 9d; subscriptions, £18 8s 9d ; donations, £3 5s ;'. patients' charges, £5 11s 6d; subsidy from Government, £89 10s 8d ; garden produce, 10s 2d; kitchen refuse, Is 4d; Bank. of iNew Zealand overdraft, £295 9s 4d. Total, £413 9s Bd.—Expenditure: By bank overdraft, 30th April,, £266 "13s. 3d; salaries, £62 16s; maintenance, £66 6s >4d; drugs and appliances, £5 19s; clothing, £1 Is; bedding, 18s 9d ; printing and advertisements, £6 8s 6d ; miscellaneous expenses, 10a lOd; commission, 11s; furniture, £2 ss, Total, £413 9s 8d. —Assets : Amount, applied for from Government, 31st March, for deficiency, £194 10s lid; subsidies for two months, £32 17s 3d.-Liabilities: Bank of New Zealand overdraft, £295 9s 4d; salaries, £58 12s; tradesmen's accounts, £57 6s sd.
Copie* of telegrams received from the Government and replies thereto were then read. The Colonial Secretary stated in one of the messages that the Government had no desire to interfere with the management of the Hospital if the expenditure was not increased. The Chairman remarked that it might be wise to make air future app intments upon the understanding that if the Government desired to make other arrangements the Hospital officials might be discharged with one month's notice. Messrs Kenshaw, Frater, Mcllhone' and others spoke upon the subject introduced by the Chairman, but it was eventually decided to make the appoint* ments as formerly. The receipt of £3 was acknowledged from the Rev. Mr Laishley, part of the proceeds of the sale of photographs of Mrs Hampson. A vote of thanks, upon the motion of Mr Mcllhone seconded by" Mr Mennie, was passed to Mr Laishley. The appointment of surgeon, dispenser, and secretary was then proceeded with. Mr Mcllhone proposed that the election take place by ballot, Mr, Lush seconded. Mr Jienshaw moved that it be by open voting. Mr Mcllhone withdrew his motion, whereupon the Rev. Mr Neill took up Mr Mcllhone's motion and spoke in favour of the ballot.—Mr McCullough seconded Mr Neill's motion, in order to test the feelings of the meeting. The result was in favour of voting by ballot. Dr Payne was declared elected house surgeon, after a ballot had been taken. Messrs Aitken and Honiss being the only applicants for the positions of dispenser and secretary respectively, were declared elected. Mr Ehrenfried spoke highly of the serrices of both gentlemen during the time he held the position of President. The tenders of the following tradesmen were accepted :—Mears and Co., grocers, the only tender; Dalziel, for meat; Rolleston and Son, for bread ; Maher, for milk; Twcntymao, for funerals ; and Mrs O'Brien for washing. Mr Corves gave notice of motion to be considered at next meeting, that the time of meeting be altered from 4 o'clock to 7.30.—Mr Mulligan gave notice that, at the same time, be would move that the place of meeting be changed to the Borough Council Chambers. The House Committee appointed for present month were Messrs Comes, Wilson, Mennie, and Ehrenfried.,
