Thames Harbour Board.
The usual monthly meeting of the Board was held yesterday afternoon. Present— Mr Bagnall (Chairman), Messrs Osborne, Head, Wilson, Brown, McUowan, and Carpenter. LETTEBS. Amongst the letters received, were one from the Collector of Customs re the Board's demand for rent f r the Custom House. The matter was relegated to the Chairman. One from Mr Snowling to tho effect that he did not require the Shortland wharf coal shed any louder. The Chairman intimated that he ha<i accepted an offer of £20 per annum from the Thames ftiver Steam Navigation Co. The Chairman's action was approved. One from the County Council resigning the Imperial Grown battery site.—Received. BEPOBT, The Harbour Master's monthly report is as follows:—"I beg respectfully to report for jour information that tlte braces of the Goods Wharf are, in many places eaten through by the worms ; the wharf, in consequence, is getting rickety, and not very sate for heavy loads to pass over it. This only refers to the lower part of the wharf, from the silt works down to end T. The other, or upper part, is not likely to suffer from the same cause, owing to the protection from worms of that part of the structute by the filling in. The cheapest plan of repair—in my opinion—would be to scarf pieces on to the defective braces, bolting on the sound wood and extending to the strongest parts of the piles. It need only be done to the worst places at present, and carried on as necessity demands. I believe this work would save the wharf, and probably last as long as the other parts of it. The matter waa referred to the chairman.
OVEEDBAET. The Secretary was pleased to state that the overdraft had been reduced to £3966. GOODS SHED. No reply baring been received from Messrs Fraser and Tinne with reference to the Burke street wharf goods shed, the matter was further relegated to the chairman. ..." . . : ■ \ APPOINTMENT OF MAGAZINE KEEPER. Applications for the position of magazine keeper at a salary of £25 jper annum were received from Messrs T. Dyas, Pi Nolan, L. Gubb, and E. SchoCeld.—Mr Dyas' application was informal.—After considerable discussion, Mr Gubb was appointed. MAGA3INE. The Chairman and Messrs Osborne and Read were appointed a committee to see to the repairs of the trucks on the powder magazine tramway* - , -■;■■ LOAN. " ■■■"• ":; ': - The Chairman said he had been negotiating for the floating of a loan of £5000,
and believed he could accomplish th desired end. He wished to obtaiu per- i natssion *O bring the matter to au i S s UO . i A.t present the Board was paying to the bank interest at the rate of 9 per cent., 1 whilst ho believed that by floating th e loan tbey would not hare to pay more \ than 7 per cent., besides which they would ! j not be required to pay all their revenue j into the bank, as at present, in order to i liquidate the overdraft. He thought the best term would be ten years. Jt was decided to empower the Chair--W to n«B9tiate for a loan of debentures f or £5000 only to be issued at present. J This was all the business.
