OUR MINES.

NEW NORTH DEVON.

The retorting yesterday was the result of four days' run at the Herald battery with 16 head of stamps.

MOANATAIRL

The mine manager's weekly report is as follows :-—" Point Russel: In driving east from creek level crosscut, the reef 2£ feet thick, well defined, and compact stone, containing a good deal of antimony. Ten tons of stuff from here hare been treated, but was not payable ; in future, only the best parts of the reef will be saved for testing. Nonpareil, No. 5 leTel: Driving east has been suspended for the present, in order to clean out and repair a level in the hanging-wall. In opening this old level we discovered a leader 8 iuehes thick, containing some good mineral; about a week's work will bs:. required l before any quartz can be oroken te ascertain its value. Morning

Star section : At the 50 feet level there is ' a series of leaders and stringers in the walls of the old stopes ; these will pay well to take out, and a large quantity of quartz from here can be forwarded to the battery at little cost, which will leave a profit. 80-feet level: The south cross-cut has intersected the main slide, and we are now driving on the seaward side of it. Stoping on No 1 leader is suspended, and a rise is being put up to prospect the block of ground before any further stoping is done. A contract has been let to drive from tunnel level to Central Italy shaft, 120 feet, at 7s sd. Our gold return this month is very small, in consequence of but little picked stone coming to hand ; during past four weeks 310 tons of stuff have been treated, yielding 81fozs of retorted gold. —Robert Comeb."
