One of oar Southern telegrams yesterday eonrefed the information that the Blhnß up of the' racancy caused by the resignation of Mr Oliver would not take place until thef return of the Premier from Wellington. We do not beliere it to be a matter of much importance who obtains "the vacant portfolio of Public Worke, it being our belief that the reign of the Hall Ministry i« now nearly orer. Rumor points to two or three individuals «s the likely iuccessors of Mr Oliver, amongst them being Mr Bain, member for %er cargill, and Mr G. McLean, member for Watkouaiti. If the Government select Mr Bain, they will make a fatal mistake, that gentVeman having lost the confidence of his constituents, whereas, Mr McLean, who plays the part of the swaggering bully for the Conservatives is likewise for obvious reasons unsuitable. The Government will show a little wisdom if they give some harmless political nonentity the portfolio, as he will be less likely to get himself or his colleagues into trouble. | There are too much brains in the Cabinet already. ■
