DUNEDIN.
This day. The Tartrua enqniry was resumed yesterday, when Captain Underwood, of the Jtotomabana, gave evidence as to tbe dangers in the vicinity of the late catastrophe. He thought that the navigation would be rendered safe by a light ship being placed outside Toby Rock. The chief officer was recalled, and said he understood the;'captain's instructions to be that he (the mate) was not to take on himself the responsibility of altering the; vessel's course 'unless in case of immediate danger
Edward Maloney, the second mate, was recalled, and in anlwer to the Bench said that tbe man on tbe look out ought to have seen breakers before witness did.
Mr Smith addressed the Court on behalf of tbe mates, and held that they had been placed in a most anomalous position through the views which he understood the Court to take, on account of tbe very ambignous language of the Act.
The Court adjourned at 5.30, Mr Simpson, R.M., intimating that he would give notice when he would -sit to deliver jndgment. ■ •
