The following companies have paid insurances on the s.s. Tararua i-Colomal £3500; New South Wales Marine, £500. United (of Sydney), £500. The Tararua enquiry 3ia* been adjourned till Thursday, in order to give the mates' counsel an opportunity of deciding what course to tnke to meet the charge against them which the Court holds has been disclosed by the evidence. In the evidence to-day it came out that the Union Company admitted the boats and life-saving appa^ ratus on the vessel were pnly for 136 passengers, whilst the Government Surveyor's declaration ' was that they were sufficient for 225. The Court will call the attention of Government to this matter.

Peter Hodge Kirk, ex-pressman, com mitted suicide by hanging last night. On his body a letter was found stating tllat the cause of the act was separation from his wife and family. Last week bis wife sued him for maintenance. The letter added, " I suppose the Jury will bring in insanity, but I am, not insane, and never rf ■ r'y. I-
