She got the child from another woman by the direction of a third woman, named Mrs Brough. Dr Ovenden said the cause of death was tapis mesinterica, but as he did not know the child's name he would ndt give a certificate of death. He telegraphed to the solicitor, and the latter said he did not know the name, but would ascertain it, and took no further notice. The child had been poorly treated. The Foreman of the Jury said they were quite satisfied as to the cause of death, and thought the police ought not to take any further steps, but the Coroner would not consent to this, and adjourned the inquest till Thursday next, when the solicitor and Mrs Brough will be brought up.
Two attempts were recently made to set fire to a house at Leethfield by means of firing a hedge dose to it. A man named Hennessy has been arrested on suspicion.
Mr Saunders addressed hi» constituents at Wakari. After claiming to have done more than any other member to reduce the public expenditure, he said he could not support Grey, whose Government bad in two years, to their great disgrace, spent £ 15,000,000. He spoke highly of Atkinson's speech, and said the present was the first Government that ever reduced expenditure a shilling. He supported the Property .Tax, but' improvements should be exempted; the land should be taxed to catch the speculators, but not improvements. He' Was strongly opposed to protection, but supported the present Education system, and thought its cost and that of Charitable Aid was rightly charged to the Consolidated Revenue. The so called liberal party had no claim to the title; the real liberals were men like Fox, Ormond and Beader Wood. A vote of confidence was passed.
