DUNEDIN.
This day.
The Tararua enquiry was continued yesterday. The examination of the Chief Officer was resumed: —When the Captain came on deck he had no conrer sation with him beyond that the ship was making a good course. The boat of which he had charge was capsized by a blind roller before reaching the surf. The plan he proposed to adopt to land men from his boat was that one should jump over and take a line ashore. He did not consider they were in great danger from the blind rollers when they had only ,< eight feet of water. He was thinking how to save the lives of the passengers. James Williams 1, a passenger,, gave unimportant evidence. "^^ Edward Maloney. the seSMfi mater gave evidence as to what occurred up to five o'clock of the morning of the'wreck. He said, "It might be ten or fifteen minutes after' when I fancied I could hear the surf on the beach that I went aft and told the Captain,! thought she was was rather close. He was then looking at the chart on bis table He came and looked along on the starboard side, and lushed to the wheel, which is aft in the Tararua ; pnt the helm hard a starboard, and as the ship was coming round she struck aft. When she sUuek she dragged heavily for perhaps a few minutes and then bumped and settled down. After she first struck she canted her head to the northward. Tliere was broken water all around her. I could then see the loom of the land. Although he fancied he could hear the surf he gave no orders to the look out man to keep a sharp look-out. On the Friday afternoon the sea was breaking so heavily as to be impossible for his boat to return to the ship. The enquiry adjourned till 10 tlis morning.
The Chamber of Commerce met yesterday to repeive Mr Wales' report on" l;is visit to the meat refrigerating works in Victoria and New South Wales. That gentleman handed in a leugthy report, and after detailing the points of difference between Gilford and Colem. n rad Bell's machine he recommended the latter. He thought £6000 or £7000 would cover the cost of the necessary buUdiugs au i ph< ,t. It was resolved to print the report, and cause it to be circulated. A committee was appointed to draw up a prospectus.
