THE COUNTY AND THE ALBURNIA.
(To the Editor of the Evening Star.) Sib.—Seeing that gome members of the Thanes County Council have not as yet been satisfied with the injury done to (he Alburni* G.M. Coy., I now find by the report of their last meeting <hat tfiey are trying to rinditiate their notion a by adding insult to injury ;in making statements which are not trme, and I think I can satisfy .the public that Mr Macffarlane was/quite justified in making the statemehts he'did-at the annnal meeting. In th^first place one of the Covnrillors reTAtrlcg on : the first letter that was fofwarded to the Conucil by the Alburnia Coiipatrr re water for that Company's batter}'; it being to this effect—" That they tthe company) were satisfied with the ;existing . arrangement, and were willini 1 to continue taking the water at the then present rate." Here the Councillor ■tftt^iyhft the Company was not paying for BBore than one half of the water it was then siarng. This statement, he must -—llHT^itnown. was far from truth, as the Tomfwny was .then paying hs much as they ha*!6'over paid since within a few shillings perwek. 'Tn answer to that letter the Company received a reply from the Council intimating that if the application remained in that form, they wpuldbe the first that should stop %hen the water fell short, am) also statit»)r^that if the Company would Bpply for -witter by the yesar t'»ey would stand on >qtia? *terms with all others whose application had been made in that form. I then, /at.'once, made sn application ns followss—"To the Chairman. Thames Covnty Council.—Sir—l hereby make application on behalf of the Albuiaia Alburnia G-M.Co., registered, for a snfiicient quantity of water to work their battery for a period of (12) twelve months from thia date. — Thomas Radfqbp,", Now .these are the teims upon "whiisn water wvs granted to the Albmoia,Company, »nd a1! bills.forwarded Tdf water have in«ariably been paid when d«e. Mr Macfffltlane had also good reason* to believe, that if a certain. party had been engaged manager of the, A 1 bur jia Battery, vuat the Company would have been treated fairly, as commnniration- had been forwarded tt him, that a certain member of a local body here r.qwesHted the nanager to use his influc-vice with the -directors to procure for f ember of (he Cooncil the management r.{ the battery a'so stating that it would be to tlie advantage of the Alburaia Company to do so. The above is a r true statement, and I think you ''will see with me that the Albania Company has-been unfairly de.lt with, a«d.thpir Chairman insulted for slating attbV annuml meeting what was per» fectly Irnfi'and which was his duly to do, and that he did it at the proper time and place, /i pay also mention that many shareholders; here have expressed their snrprWtiutt the gentleman attending the annual m«tting did not speak more strongJf tttffa* subject after it hed been introduced If the Chairman. My reason Mr Bdi*o»,-"for troubling you with the _. foregoing is, that one of the council in(inateoVtbtit my statements made by a pnblic 1 bo*f if not true ought to be contradicted: "Through the press.—l have, $* tT.'.TT';"'"'. Thos. Badfobd. Thanes, 10th May 1881,
