A, mbbtihg of. the Orphanage Committee °was held this afternoon. Thk New Zealand agent of the Dramatic | Authors' Copyright Society, Mr E. T. Gillon 1 of Wellington has telegraphed to Mr J. W | Poulgrain that he will require the payment of £5 5s for the perfoimance of Messrs Gilbert and Sullivan's "Sorcerer" by the Thames Amateur Operatic Company. Ik the course of conversation with Sir Geo. Gray, he gate it as his opinion that the leases held by the Shortland Sawmill Company for 99 yesr*, and that of the Turua block for 45 years, were not valid ; that any person was justified in cutting trees on the lands in question, or settling down upon any portion of the block: It will be remembered that in 1879 we directed attantion to the subject, and it was through the representation of the Mayor that the Government were urged to insist upon gum-dipgerß being allowed to follow their pursuit upon the Turua and Eauaeranga blocks. It is probable more will be heard about tha question. At the meeting of electors at Coroman'lel a great deal of amusement was caused by the ', layings and doings of one or two half tipsy individuals. The most inherent good humor, however, prevailed throughout, and few appeared to enjoy the fun more than Sir George Grey himself. The sayings and antics of one Barry were such as one might find recorded in the works of Lever or Samuel Lover, and his estimate of the sort of a man that should propose a vote of confidence/that he should be able to sin* Rory O'More, is ludicrous in the extreme. Mb Isaac Keary, for many years messenger at the Post Offico here died in the Hospital to-day, of dropsy. Mr Keary was one of our oldest residents, and was highly respected by all hit acqaintances. - ' i Onb of the latest novelties in the adrertis,V« line w that adopted by Mr H. H. Smith.
