ARRVIAL OF THE CITY of NEW YORK WITH THE EUROPEAN & AMERICAN MAILS VIA SAN FRANCISCO.
-* . (Pee Pbess Association.) AUCKLAND. This day. The City of New York, on arrival* signalled for the health officer, and Dr Philson boarded her. The captain reported small pox prevailing at San Francisco and Honolulu, but at the latter port only among the natives. There had been four cases of measles amongst the children, of whom there are twelve on board, but at present there are only two cases, and these are convalescent. The first broke out on the 12th, and the last on the 25th of April. One death occurred on the passage, that of the Rev Wm. Cruden, who died of dysentery and general debility, and was buried on the following day. Dr Philson, in accordance with the regulations, but contrary to wish, decided that the vessel mu9t be quarantined, and the mails fumigated. She accordingly steamed away towards dusk to the quarantine station at Motuihi. The Customs' launch went down to assist the landing and fumigation of the mails, but owing to the roughness of the-weather it .could not be done during the night.
