A largely attended meeting of citizens was held on Sunday afternoon in {be reading room of the Atheuaalitn to consider what might be done by the people of Tnvercargil! in the matter of the Tararua disaster. The Mayor presided. Mr Wade, solicitor, moved the appointment of a committee to proceed to the scene of the wreck, with authority to take such steps as they might deem necessary or desirable to relieve suffering. A com-mittee-of sixteen volunteers was appointed accordingly. Another committee of six has formed on the motion of Mr Kingsland, with the Mayor at its head, for the purpose of raising such funds as might be required, and in order that there mighty be some properly constituted authority ffor members of the first committee and others to communicate with as occasion required. The- tone of the meeting was one of great sympathy with those who hare suffered by the calamity, and universal regret was expressed that the. erroneous nature of the first telegram from Wyndham, which announced that 1 the passengers had all beea landed, had lulled public apprehension and' prevented prompt action. ..3»v ■/'-;■• ' - A male body was found on the beach; and has been identified by Thomson as Bailey, the waiter m- tbe^Criterion Hotel, Dunedin. Mr McCullooh, E.M. and Coroner, proceeded with the) search party last niuhfc to the Toitou. The Eev Mr Fairclough, the Wesleyan Minister of Inrercargill, also went, with a View: to the identification of the Wesleyan Conference delegates' bodies. His wife is related to Captain Garrard.
