This day.

The news of the drowning of the passengers per the Tararua has caused a profound sensation here as several highly respected citizens were on board, some being en route for England.

Early this morning, a grocer's shop and house belonging to A. Hulme. were partially destroyed by fire. Mrs Hulme md children escaped in. their night dresses while the furniture and stock were totally destroyed. The total loss was kbout £1100, and the Insurances are yictoria, £4,00; Standard, £300; South British, £6CO ; Transatlantic, £200, The origin of the fire is unknown.

The barque Thurso arrived from the Cape yesterday, and reports that the barque Bells arrived there on March the 2nd. On the voyage she fell in with an iron barque called the India, bound for South Australia with iron machinery. She was in a sinking condition, having sprung a leak, and the pumps breaking down, the captain, his wife, and crew, numbering seventeen, were taken on board the Bells, and the barque aban*

doned.
