OUR MINES

The cleaning out and repairing of the old workings on Herival's leader will not be completed for a few days yet. The quartz from the No. 2 reef at, No. 1 level has a kindly appearance, though no gold has been seen in it yet. In the winze at No. 3 level the same reef looks well, being heavily mineralised.

QUEEN OF BEAUTY.

For ten long months this company has kept pumping with scarcely a day's intermission the whole time. The difficulties which sprang up so frequently have at last been surmounted, and the water is now within a short distance— 44 feet*—from the bottom. The amount of water raised has been something enormous, thinks to the efficiency of the turbine, which performs even more than was expected of it. The* managing director, Mr Ronald McDonald, hopes to hare the mine free from water in about a

month if he has any luck, and then the deepening of the shaft will be commeheed straight away. There is a large block on the main reef from the shaft to the Piako below the No. fr level, and stoping operations will be started as soon as access can be had to the No. 8 level. Now that the company has gone to all the trouble and expense of pumping out the water, the directors are determined that ao accident to the race will let' the water gain on them, to effect which men are now engaged preparing for the fitting of the old Piako boilers, so that they may be used ai a stand by. The manager informs me. that a tribute will be let at the No. 6 level on Monday next. GOLD EErUBNS.
