THE Evening Star. PUBLISHED DAILY AT FOUR P.M. Resurrexi. TUESDAY, APRIL 26, 1881.

When . our contemporary the Herald wishes to initiate the advocacy of some new enterprise or swindle, as the case may be, it generally indulges in a long story on things in general, introducing with wonderful ingenuity, the matter, nearest the editorial mindj by a sidewind. This is what is called a " feeler," and the journalist who is successful at " feeliDg " is generally looked on as a successful member of the craft. In yesterday's issue of our august contemporary a.feeler occurs, the string played on being the necessity of railway communication through the Patetere Block. The Herald expatiates on the grand climate, splendid country, etc., and then delicately introduces the subject to its readers. Thames people are fully awake to the power of the Patetere land ring, and they will: at once see .that the HeTald's article is but the key note of what they will struggle for during the ensuing session. We have no objection to those landmonopolists bleeding their long suffering country for a railway, but we must take care that the fact of their getting one will not prejudice our clams. The Colonial Exchequer is pretty low; and tbe construction of two railways in one part of the country at the same time would be more than the Government would care to altempfc.
