Thames Borough Council.
The usual fortnightly meeting of the Council was held last evening. Present —His Worship the Mayor, Crs Mennie, McGowan, Osborne, Wilson, Speight, Marshall, Veale and Bawden. ABPHALT. A letter was read from Messrs Mennie and Dey, applying for asphalt (20 yards.) —Keferred to Works Committee. "WATER PIPE. Mr McDermot wrote, applying for a pipe up Broad street. If the Council would supply the material he would lay it free of charge. MINEBS* BIGHTS. A letter was read from the Warden, stating that he knew of no revenue due to the Council on account of Miners' Bights, etc. If the Council thought they had any claim, application should be made to the Native Minister. IMPOUNDING ACTS. A copy of the Impounding Act, Amendment, was received from the Colonial Secretary, who asked to know if it contained what was wanted by the Council. The Town (Jlerk said it contained only a portion of what they wanted. It was necessary to post the Act at the Public Pound to comply with the ordinance. CASH. A treasury voucher for £114s, goldfield revenue was received. SCHOOL WATEB SUPPLY. A letter was received from the secretary to the Tararu School Committee, stating that as the Council had stopped the school's supply of water from Boundary Creek, the committee hoped the Council would give them school water from the main supply. Cr McGowan moved the connection be made, but the matter was eventually referred to the Water Committee. RETORT OP "WATER COMMITTEE. The report of the Works Committee was read as follows:—" The Committee, having in view tbe present overdraft of the water rate account, do not recommend that any additional 2-inch pipes be purchased at present-of Mr McCaul; and with respect to his (McCaul's) water rate being paid in advance for some years, they find that an agreement was made between the Thames Water Supply Committee and Mr McCaul, that if he at his own cost laid a sub main up Broad street, bis water rate or charge for water should be considered paid for seven years in advance from date of the agreement December, 1879. It is recommended that a memo, to this effect be made, year by year in the rate book, and the name removed from the defaulters' list. It is recommended that the shingles necessary for shingling the workshops in Pahu street- be procured, and the work done at a convenient opportunity. The Committee referred the matter of claims made by Mr P. J. Perry and M? T. Spencer for right to free water to Mr Miller for his opinion, who-had this day handed your Committee the attached telegram from Mr Tyler in reference thereto."
la connection with the above a letter was read from the Auckland City Council, in reply to one from the Town Clerk making enquiries concerning the means adopted to prevent breakages in the mains. The letter stated that the Council enforced the use of screw-down taps and air chambers.
A telegram from Mr Tyler was also appended to the report, stating that his opinion would be favorable to the Council in the matter between the Council and Messrs Spencer and Perry. The report was adopted. REPORT OP "WORKS COMMITTEE.
The repor: of the Works Committee was read. The following is the concluding portion :—The Foreman of Works has made application for 2285 yards of road metal for maintaining the streets of the Borough in repair. The quantities required by him for each street are shown in the attached list. The committee are aware that this metal is urgently required if the streets are to be maintained fit for traffic during the winter; but hesitate to ask the Council to saction the purchase of so large a quantity at present. They ask authority to procure 15CU yards, and will endeavor to make this smaller quantity last until the spring.—The Moanatairi and Waiotahi roads are solely used for goldfield traffic, and the Foreman of Works reports they both must receive a coat of road metal if goldfield traffic is to be maintained over them this winter. The Moanatairi road will require 3CO, and the Waiotahi 175 yards of metal. The cost of the metal, cartage, and spreading will be £237 10s. It is recommended that application be made to Government for half this sum out of the vote of Parliament for goldfields roads.—Three plans have been prepared and submitted to the directors of the Queen of Beauty mine for the diversion of the water from their turbine from the water tables of Cochrane street.—The Committee call attention to the disgraceful state in which the contractors laying the 4-inch and 3-inch mains along the Taraiu road have left the road, especially from the Kuranui to the Opotomoko creek, and recommend that it be an instruction to the Foreman of Works to inspect all streets opened for laying in pipes before the contractors are paid for the works completed by them, and that this road be put in order at once. The report was adopted. EEPORT OF TIKE BRIGADE COMMITTEE.
The report of the Fire Brigade Committee was read and adopted. It was as follows :—" The Committee hare to report that the Shorfcland Fire Brigade find that their canvas hose will not stand the pressure of water given from the nineinch mains, and apply for 16 lengths of leather hose to replace the canvas hose worn out, Application is also made by the officers of this Brigade for a T coupling, to have one double and one single delivery hydrant with their branches altered to fit the 2-inch hose; to have a new supply pips for water to the enginehouse ; and to have the triangle stand repaired. The Shortland Brigade have in stock eight pairs of 2-inch couplings, and six lengths of canvas 2-inch hose, for which they have no use; the Brigade also have condemned the small fire-engine as unfit for use, and request its removal. The Grahamstown Brigade made application for three lengtns of suction hose without couplings, for their large fireengine, and five lengths of leather hose to replace that injured at the fire in Beach Koad, the Marine Hotel ;> also permission to expend £4 in new timber for fire-bell stand, previous to removal of same from Williamson street. The Committee recommend that the application of the Shortland and Grahamstown Brigades be granted by the Council, and that they send to M«sßrg Shand and Mason by the ttbil winch leaves ou Monday for the hose
lately used by the London brigades at the prices quoted in the circular." ACCOUNTS. Accounts amounting to £29 2s, wages, etc., were passed for payment. ' BUBGESB BOLL. It was resolved to hold the statutory special meeting for revision of the burgeis roll on Thursday next. HOSPITAL MBMBEEB. Crs Yeale, Wilson, and Mennie were appointed Borough members of the Hospital Committee. The meeting then adjourned.
