OUR MINES
CALEDONIAN.
The discovery of the reef on the No. 1 .level crosscut sets at rest what has been a moot point for some time. Though hard, the lode looks exceedingly well for gold, all the usual comcomitants of the precious metal being present in large quantities. The manager is cleaning out and repairing the workings in Herival's old tribute section. The report is as follows: —" The reef intersected in cross-cut, No. 1 level is very hard and cross grained stone. Very little headway has been made in consequence. The reef looks very well, almost every kind of mineral which indicates gold bearing stone being in the portions which have been gone through. The reef in the face now contains large quantities of bright yellow mundic, antimony, and ruby silver, and as the No. 2 reef's hanging-wall generally carries the gold bearing quartz in more or less quantities, we may look forward to better days. This reef is standing intact. 150 feet in the Old Caledonian, and the whole of the Otago ground^ and if payable ground should be met with it will beneficially effect the No.. 1 reef which is still in the baugingwall of No. 2 and runs the same distance without ever being seen at the level. There has been a good deal of misgiving and doubt about the existence of these reefs being there, which now and forever must be put at rest by their discovery. I am blasting down No. 2 reef, in winze No. 3 level, but have not yet reached the hanging-wall. The reef looks very promising, and carried a quantity of heavj minerals. This reef and the surrounding country is of a most promising nature, and as soon as the hanging-wall is reached, I shall, as soon as possible, get a trial crushing to see whether it will pay or otherwise. 1 am still cleaning out and repairing Herival's passes with two men. The passes have been rather troublesome, as all the cap pieces are broken, and I have not only to clean them out, but have to re-timber. However, a few days should get this place into workiug order. Paltridge and party crushed 30 tons for the yield of 49ozs 3dwts gold, vulue 53s lOd, less i7| per cent—£23 3s Id, balance to them £109 2s lid. I shall as soon as possible get a trial crushing from the No. 2 reef, No. 1 crosscut, and from present appearances it should turn out payable.—T. B. Hioks,
CUKE. Operations are confined to the No. 5 and G-ilmour's lodes, but there is nothing worth chronicling. BENDIGO UNITED. The work of cleaning out Carpenter's level is now finished and drmng ahead will be started in a day or two.
GOLD BETUBNS. Gtoldbn Hiiii.—Thirty tons from this claim yielded 4X)|ozs gold.
Amujbnia.—Sawyer and party's crushing yielded 15ozs 6dwts gold. Pbince Impjehial.—Scanlan and party's crushing gave 6ozs 15dwt3 gold. Don Pedeo.—A crushing for Kneebone and party yielded 37ozs 7dwts gold.
