At a meeting held last night of gentlemen interested in making suitable acknowledgment to J. H. Shaw and others who contributed to the recent result of the asylum enquiry, it was resolved that His Worship be requested to call a public meeting to consider the resuli of the enquiry.
A serious fire occurred at Bulls this morning about nine o'clock, resulting in the total destouciion of a six-roomed cottage belonging to a man named Knight. The origin of the fire is unknown at present. The house was insured but not ;to its full amount. ■: ■ ) '
Joseph Hall and Christina Goodwin, .charged with child murder, were committed for trial at the next sitting of the Supreme Court, Wanganui.
Tuesday
Long Brothers, builders, of Picton, who were arrested at Napier, were brought down by the steamer Go-ahead this morning, and were charged at the Magistrate's Court with absconding from their creditors. - Debts ■. were shown amounting to" £242, "and fchey confessed moat of th 6 items. The icase wa3 adjourned^ until to-morrow. :
