IMMORTALITY, AND A SOUL ACCORDING TO THE BIBLE.
(To the Editor of the Evening Star.) Sik, —The spirit of enquiry upon the above is everywhere increasing, and since Mr Brown lectured at the Thames the people here are not exempt from that enquiring spirit. Some, at any rate it is evident by your correspondents, " Seeker after Truth" and " Subscriber,"suate beginning to reflect and to question the truth of that hoar\ -headed domna of Paganism and Apostate Christianity— the natural or inherent immortality of mankind —that original lie of Satan. There is good reason to question very much of religious teaching in these day, and to accept it, because it has become the established belief, is the extreme of folly. " Prove all things, and hold fast to that which is good," is the injunction of the great Apostle Paul. That, and that alone which has the warrant of Divine revelation, should the Christian accept if he desires to learn the " Whole counsel of God, and become mightyin the, Scriptures; and, moreover, if he desires, as the end of his faith, to receive at the hands of a returning Christ, an inInheritance of a coming age, incorruptible, undefined, and that fadeth not away, eternal in the heavens. Every error of men must be given up, and every truth of the Bible be embraced finny, would we become perfect men arid women in Christ Jesus our Lord, " Looking for and hasting the coming of our Master, who shall change these bodies of our vileness, and fashion them like unto His glorious body : " herein will be immortality and eternal life. I write now as 1 have ever written, that I may, peradventure, be of some assistance to sincere and earnest enquirers after Bible truth. It was for this end and no other that I commenced the publication of Enoch; but as it was in Jeremiah's time, so it is now ; there is very much to "root out and to pulldown, and to destroy, and to throw down," before there can be any true building and planting, and especially in spiritual matters. Now, this rooting out of old stumps that have been "rooted and grounded " for a thousand years, is not very pleasant work, and this pulling down of old systems that have possessed the minds of the people for ages, is a very tedious process; but, as sure as the present dispensation is closing, so sure is it that this work has got to be done, and rough indeed will be much of the labor that will accomplish the object. The falsehoods of " Endless Torment," " Immortality of the Soul," " Conversion, of the World," and a variety of other equally senseless and unscriptural dogmas are not got rid of in a day. They are too deeply rooted in ecclesiastical minds for that, and methinks they will not be got rid of for the most part but with the destruction of those who hold and advocate them. However, it is well that those who see should enlighten the minds of those who are blind'—many of them leaders of the Wind—lest they all fall into the ditch (great tribulation) together. " Seeker after truth," " Subscriber," and others of like mind should proceed in their search after Bible truth, nothing daunted by such men as Mr Horn, the Demon Spiritist, for they can never know truth while they deny the very essence of all true religion. They deny the celestial Son of God, Christ Jesus; they deny His atonement, which redeemed mankind from sin and death; they deny His present High Priesthood at His Father's right hand; they deny His second advent and His rapidly approaching kingdom of the earth. The denial of these Gospel verities places such as him altogether in - the dark as regards true spiritual realities, and by such denial he and those with him cut themselves off from any participation in the glories of the coming ages, and from the immortality to be enjoyed by those who attain these ages of bliss. Now, all Bible truth is in a nutshell. No elaborate dessertations are necessary to describe religious truth. It is, in general, given in the fewest words possible. For illustration : " The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ." How simple ! How easily to be understood, were not men's minds filled with the theological nonsense of the ecclesiastics of Christendom! That magnificent passage quoted by "Subscriber" is another illustration. of how few words are required by the Holy Spirit to convey to the mind the most glorious truths of the Deity—Timothy vi. 13 to 16. W. Wood.
