Thames Rifle Rangers.
The corps paraded in uniform on Thursday evening at the Shortland Hall, when the attendance was unusually large. Captain Douglas, who was in command, was accompanied by Lieut. McFarlane, who apoligised for the unavoidable absence of Lieut. Kitching. The company after inspection by its commanding officer was placed in the hands of District Instructor, Lieut. Grant, who said he would take advantage of the moonlight, and therefore marched the corps to the beach for instruction in skirmishing, extending, closing, wheeling, changing of front, and various other movements, which were most efficiently performed in the double time. The relieving of skirmishes, forming supports, rallying squares, and pre-
paring for caralry were executed in a manner which reflected credit on the instructor. The company having returned to the IJ all several new members were proposed and seven attested. Capt. Douglas then presented a number of prizes which had been won at the last competition, including the two substitute Cups presented by Dr Andrews.
Capt. Douglas informed the company of the legal steps taken by Vol. McKee against him for the purpose of obtaining this first Cup given by Dr Andrews to the corps, after which a motion was proposed and unanimously carried, condemning the action and conduct of McKee, also requesting the Captain to disqualify him from shooting for any prizes presented to the company. It was also unanimously carried that the Captain defend at any cost the action of McKee re the Cup, and that the Captain write to Dr Andrews, thanking him for his kind liberality to the corps. Three ringing cheers were then given for the doctor and his amiable lady, Mrs Andrews.
The company was then notified to assemble at the hall on Monday at 9 am! when a break would be in waiting to convey them to the range were a competition would be held. From twenty to thirty prizes are already in hand, given by leading citizens. Honorary members are invited fo be present and try their skill with the rifle. The proceedings of the day will conclude with a concert and dance at the Hall, and will doubtless be a great success, as all the local talent have been secured for the occasion. *
