Theee will .of oourge be ho publication of the Stab on Good Friday. Will our advertising friends please remember this ?

Thh favourite and commodious paddle steamer Te Aroha will make an excursion to Paeroa on Easter Monday. The hour fixed for the departure, c t also for the return, is very suitable, and the excursion will doubtless be largely taken advantage of.

The p.s. Te Aroha will make an excursion to the- Miranda on G-ood Friday morning. Proceeds will be devoted, to the building fund of the Primitive Methodist Church.

The Thames Scottish will parade for drill in plain clothes at the Gresh^im hall ta-night, when instruction will be imparted by Adjutant Sohofield in general detail of duties for the Waikato trip. '

We would direct especial attention to the advertieamentfrom the Public Works Department calling for tendera for 17.C00 split puriri sleepers for the Thames-Waikato railway. .

At the R.M. Court this morning the assault case, HiU v. Moars, was further adjourned. •

We understand that L. J. Bagnall, Ksq., has received the appointment of Licensing Commissioner, vice Captain Souter, who is leaving the district; We consider the appointment a most judicious one.

In accordance with hia usual custom the manager of the Bank of New Zealand notifies their numerous customers that their establishment here will be, closed on Friday, Saturday, and Monday n^xt, those being the days appointed by statute as Bank holidays.

We have the authority of the Borough Collector for stating that there will shortly be issued a batch of 200 summonses to defaulting ratepayers.. Not a few of the amounts now appearing on the defaulters list only amount to,a shilling or two, which the cost of the jftunmona will; more than double. <> *

v_. Them is on view in Mr Mciivdr's window an elegant fern picture in an elaborate leather work frame—a shooting, prize to the Thames Hifle Eangers from a lady friend. We are informed that there is abo a large number of prizes given by bHßinesß people and others to be competed for on Easter Monday. The company, almost to a man, bave decided to compete, and, as will be seen by advertisement, the day's prof=3edings will be wound up with a concert end dance at their Hall, Shortland. The programme will appear shortly, and we are given t.» under, •tand that the leading vocal and instrumental talent of the place will add to the enjoyment of the entertainment.

The Installation banquet of the Corinthian Lodge, E. 0., eventuated last evening.

A KOTIFIOATION from the Warden respecting the Easter holidays, protection of claims, &c, appears in another column.

We would remind our readers of the Bazaar at the Volunteer Hall this evening, ia aid of the Primitive Methodist Church Building Fund. The object is a most deserving one, and we hope that by to-night's operations a good round sum will be realised. The Naval Brigade Band will be in attendance, and enliven the proceedings with choice selections of mußic. Every visitor will receive a present. Sons inquisitive people are, anxious feo know why Messrs Kenrick and Porter did not accompany Mr Percy Smith and party to Komata to-day. *

The Hauraki Engineers are informed by advertisement that they are each to bring or send their baggage with the name of owner attached, to the drill hall to-morrow, Tursday evening, where Quertermaster-Sergeant Morrison will be present to receive and pack the same. Owing to the expressed wish of the Waikato troopers, that the Thames blue jackets should bring with them their big guns, Capfc. Wildman, with the approval of the Officer Commanding the District, has directed the removal of these almost obsolete models of ancient warfare. The Brigade have been busily employed polishing their encumbrances, and they now shine like Yankee dollars. The wish hr.s been expressed that the guns might be thrown overboard on the passage, throagh stress of weather, when, perhaps, the Brigade would be provided with rield pieces like those in use by other artillery and naval corps.

The Hamilton correspondent of the Herald telegraphed on Monday as foilows:—" The member for Waikato, Mr J. B. Whyte., has received a telegram from the Minister of Public Works, stating that a barge going down the river Thames, ■with iron work for the Hami'ton railway bridge, sunk. Some of the segments were lost and some broken. The remainder were shipped on board the Doon, for New Eealand."

We believe the various corps which intend to prooeed to Waikato will vie with each other in tbeir endeavors to turn out in full strength. Both the Naval Brigade and the Scottish Battalion are confident of securing good musters, nor will the Engineers be badly represented.

The Native Lands Court, says the Gisborne Herald, presided over by Judges Heale and O'Brien, sat lately, and proceeded with the investigation of the Oariki Block, near Mr Day's, at Toroa. Old Tamihana Ruafapu was brought in on purpose to give evidence, and there is a great amount of scheming on the pave of the Waeranga a-hika' people to get in, as the land is veiy valuable. On Monday the big block, Waipaoa Matawai, 160,000 acres, will be called on. Mr Cuff has come down to advise Wi Pere, and assist him in proving the claim of Te Aitanga Mahaki. When this block is passed through, a considerable sum of money will be put in circulation. *fi>*'
