Two railway employees named Grey and Jolly were shooting at the Waikato when Grey, sighting some game, stood up to fire, the gun exploded, discharging the contents and blowing away the back part of Jolly's head, killing him instantly.

Joseph Hill, residing at the Commercial Hotel, accidentally took poisonous lotion instead of medicine. A doctor was called and by prompt measures averted any serious consequences.

A little boy, son of J. K. McDonald, Government insurance agent, fell into the Waikato river and was drowned.

Two young children, who fell from different wharves in Auckland harbour on Saturday, were rescued by the bystanders jumping in.

A. German named Charles Wegelben Tanner, who recently arrived here, was found dead in the Domain, shot through the head. He had been ill lately, and, it is supposed, low in spirits. He had no family here.

At the Police Court to-day, W. L. Sees, solicitor, of Gisborne, formerly M.H.R , commenced a series of criminal prosecution^, for libel against J. D. Wickham, of tlie Free Lance. Defendant asked for an adjournment, which was granted till Thursday.

The half-yearly meeting of the South British Insurance Company took place to day. The report showed—lncome from fire marine promiums, £65,872 ; from interest transfer fees, £5185 ; total, £71,057, which, added to £11,971 brought forward from previous half-year, makes total of £83,029. The expenditure has been fire marine losses paid outstanding at close of books, £32,830; reinsurances, £14,288 ; agents' commission^ salaries, rents, etc., £13,461; advertising, printing, stationery, £794; Underwriters' Association, fire brigades, £597 ; Government licenses, £424; making £62,396, with £5000 dividend paid, £67,396, leaving a balance of £15,633 at credit of profit and loss account, from which the'directors recom mend the payment of dividend of 10 per cent. The dividend will be payable at the head office of the company, on the 12th April, and at the branches on the repeipt of advice.
