Oub Auckland telegrams to-day show that tha celebrated race horse Golden (jrowu has been disqualified for ever by the Auckland Jockey Uub for foul riding at. Paninure. The punishment is a. serious oue, but the offence against racing laws of whioh its owner* Mr Byers, was found guilty was also serious. We feel Borry for the owner, as before this affair he has always had the credit of running his horse to win. For years the Thames people have looked upon "tha Crown" as a local borse, and v, feeling akin to national pride was been experienced here e.s the little horse achie fed victory aftec victory. - Wb are sorry io learn that the Thames will shortly loso another of ifca oldest and most respected citizens : we*-refe£ to Mr R. J. McFarland, who purposes removing with this family to Ellersllo. in the caurse of a few weeks. I A.T the sitting in Wollington of the I Supreme Court in Banco yesterday, «re Henry ■ Adams, solicitor (formerly Crown Prosecutor 1 at Nelson), defendant nob appearing to show cause, a rule wa3 mads absolute to strike him ! off the rolls. A telegbam from Hamilton s*ya :—The affiliation case, Margaret Mary Aun Steele v. Richard Kennan, late sharebroker of the Thames, occupied tbe Bench, nearly the whole of the day, the only witness examined bung the complainant To-morrow, Kenaan and his wife and experts will be examined to *ho\v whether certain letters written to fclie cdtnplainant are JCennan's. * * Wb are very pleased to notice that the Thames public are slowly availing themselves of the superior educational faculties afforded by the Thames Boys and Girls High •'choolMonday last was tbe first anniversary of. the opening of the school, and during the first quarter" the number of pupils attending was only 18 ; thiß quarter, however, .no less than 54 scholars are on the roll, »nd we understand that several more will iv all probability be enrolled during tho coming quarter, which commi'ncei on Tuesday next. In the meantime, the Head Master will be glad to afford parents every information necessary. By advertisement in another column the secretary notifies that he will atteud at the school-on Tuesday morning next for' the purpose of receiving the current quarter's feeß. The case referred to in our columns a few days ago re a dispute over the rent of some ground at Paeroa oame on for bearing at the Court at Paeroa yesterday. Mr Sheehy sued Mr Lipsey to recover £50 damages which he alleged was the value of a crop of potatoes planted by him on a piece of laud he had rented from defendant for 30a, mk! .which defendant refused to allow him to remove un til the rent was paid," defendant asserting the amount of rent to be 50s; A large quantity of evidence was adduced on behalf of plaintiff, tending to show the transaction between the parties, the defendant's refusal to allow plaintiff to roiuoro tho potatoes, aLul as to

their value*. When the evidence was conconcluded, His Worship said he doubted whether defendant had any right to distrain at all, as the amount of rent did nob appear to bare been properly agreed upon, but even admitting defendant* right to distrain, he could only take sufficient to cover the rent due and expenses ; and, according to defendant's own version, he 'hud distrained £30 or £40 worth of potatoes for the Braall amount of £2 10s due for rent. He must, therefore, hold that defendant had acled illegally in bo doing, and give judgment foi 1 nine tons of potatoes at .£3 10s a ton, which, after deducting 30a for digging, would leave £30. Defendant must *Iso pay timeouts,-which were fixed at £7 2s. ' ■
