Parliament has been prorogued by proclamation, and without any formal News has been received from Noumea that the Marquis de Hays' immigrants, ' who arrived there by the steamer India from New Ireland in a destitute condition, have been shipped for Sydney, and they are expected to arrive herein a few days. Melbourne, Wednesday. In tne Legislative Assembly tliis evening, a Select Committee was appointed to inquire into and report upon the Bill for Reform of the Constitution now before the House. Ihe Jiv. Mr Beswick narrowly escaped tbe same fate as the teachers, who were principally Lifu men. The report, however, "has not been confirmed. Later. A Cooktown telegram confirms the massacres at New Guinea. The news was brought to Thursday Island by Captain Dudfield, who arrived there with the missionary schooner. The following telegram was dispatched by the Police Magistrate at Thursday Island to the Colonial Secretary :—" Mr .Beswick has reported the massacre of twelve persons at Kalo, New Guinea, on March 7,Vnamely, four teachers, two of their wiveei four children, aud two native servants. Pour natives escaped by swimming. The maslacre was unprovoked, and is clearly the result of previous murders remaining uupunished. The teachers from the outlyiug stations have been removed to Port Moresby."
